No documentary record corroborates this. Place reflects that Creede is the only setting in which John and Polly knew her, consistent with her final stay there in 1932. The two accounts are independent of each other and recall different specific incidents built around the same underlying fact, which strengthens their reliability relative to a single-informant family account, though the detail remains unverified by any document.

The couple's first daughter, Edna, was born about six weeks before the 1876 date. Divorce finalized 14 Sept 1899, Teller County, Colorado. Fry." Whether a legal marriage underlies this identity, or whether the name was adopted without one, is unresolved and connected to disputed claims made in the Woodruff divorce proceedings.   • William Wilson Woodruff (b. 8 Aug 1885, Missouri) — Child of Annie and John Farney Woodruff. Died 19 Nov 1918, Laramie, Albany County, Wyoming — killed instantly, along with fellow switchman F. A. Babbitt, when the tender of a switch engine derailed in the Union Pacific's Laramie yards and pinned both men against an adjoining stock car. A Salt Lake Division payroll ledger for the preceding month confirms his employment as a trainman on the same railroad. Age at death (33) is consistent with his proven birth date. Married Hazel May Kelly (1889–1943) of Divide, Colorado; their two children, Joseph N. Woodruff (1909–1984) and Gladys Eileen Woodruff Riley (1912–1989), were nine and six at the time of his death and were raised in Divide by Hazel and her family. His body was returned from Wyoming for burial at Divide Cemetery, Divide, Teller County, Colorado — maintained today by his great-granddaughter and Shannon's cousin, Kathy Morris. 6a,6b,6c,6d

First married Sherry O. Curtis, 18 Apr 1906, Salt Lake City, Utah. Without having obtained a divorce from Curtis, she married Edwin L. Bennett — known to family as 'Ted' — 13 Sept 1920, Creede, Mineral County, Colorado, under the name Florence Curtis. The couple lived together as husband and wife from 1920 onward. On 6 Jul 1954, Florence finally divorced Sherry O. Curtis in Fremont County, Wyoming, and three days later, on 9 Jul 1954, she and Ted married again — this time lawfully — in Thermopolis, Hot Springs County, Wyoming. The 1954 divorce filing states the couple's date of separation as roughly one year prior, which does not accord with the documented 1920 Colorado marriage; see open questions. Ted himself had an earlier marriage, to Lena Garrison, 10 Jan 1916, Creede, Colorado; no divorce decree for that marriage has been located, though Ted's own sworn 1954 marriage application states he was divorced in Colorado in 1920. Ted, an Army veteran of World War I (Sergeant, Corps of Engineers, Saguache County) and a longtime electrician for Pacific Power & Light, died Feb 1974, Phoenix, Arizona; no death certificate has yet been located, though the Social Security Death Index and a contemporary obituary corroborate the date and place.   • Lee Roy Woodruff (b. 30 Oct 1889, Colorado) — Child of Annie and John Farney Woodruff. Died 21 Jun 1953, Veterans Administration Hospital, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, of bronchogenic carcinoma of the left lung; buried Memory Lawn Cemetery, Phoenix. Enumerated in his father's household, age 30, in the 1920 census, Interlachen, Putnam County, Florida — living alongside John's fifth wife, Martha, and half-sister Amelia. Served in the U.S. Army during World War I, Company E, 133rd Infantry, 34th Division; a transport passenger list names his emergency contact as his niece, Miss Rose Davis of Alamosa, Colorado — likely a daughter of his sister Anna Maud. Married Viola Hackwood, 17 Dec 1922, Lake City, Hinsdale County, Colorado, just over the mountains from Creede; the couple had at least one child born in Creede before relocating to Tolleson, Arizona, where Lee Roy worked as a blacksmith, and later divorced. His death certificate records his status as married at death, and gives his mother's maiden name as 'Mary Fry Phelps,' Missouri — a name matching neither 'Annie E. Chaney' nor any other documented identity for his mother, though it does echo the 'Fry' surname Annie is independently documented using from about 1910 onward. Died 29 Mar 1945, Veterans Administration Facility, Reno, Washoe County, Nevada, of generalized peritonitis following a spontaneous rupture of a gangrenous diverticulum of the sigmoid colon. Buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California. Death certificate confirms his father as John F. Woodruff and his birthplace as Florissant, Colorado. 9

Research Narrative

Annie E. Chaney's early life remains the project's most stubborn brick wall. Her parentage, the authenticity of "Chaney" as a birth surname, and her origins before 1877 are all unresolved, and a death certificate's claim that her father was born in France sits unreconciled against her own 1880 census entry giving his birthplace as Ohio. What can be said with confidence begins in Indiana, where her first known child, Edna Latitia, was born on 28 August 1877 — about six weeks before John Farney Woodruff's own divorce pleading states the couple married, on 10 October 1876. No marriage license has been located. From Indiana the family moved to Missouri, where Annie, John, Edna, and a second daughter were enumerated together on 3 June 1880 in Lone Oak Township, Bates County — the only surviving census to capture this family as a household, since the 1890 census did not survive and the marriage ended in divorce in 1899. That second daughter, recorded by the enumerator simply as "Maud," eleven months old, is Anna Maud Woodruff, Shannon's great-grandmother; the age recorded independently corroborates her proven birth date of 2 July 1879. Five more children followed — Robert Franklin, David Henry, and William Wilson in Missouri, Florence in Kansas, and Lee Roy and Warren Browning in Colorado — before the marriage ended in divorce in Teller County on 14 September 1899. The full circumstances of that divorce are still being researched and will substantially expand this page. What happened to Annie afterward is only beginning to come into focus. Family memory holds that she left Colorado after the divorce, and although she later returned to live in towns across the state, she did not live with her own family again until the very end of her life. By 1910 or 1911, a Trinidad city directory records her as "Anna Fry, widow of Henry" — the first dated appearance of a name she would use for the rest of her life, though no marriage license for this union has been found, and whether it represents a genuine marriage is an open question connected to claims made during her own divorce proceedings. A postcard her daughter Anna Maud sent her in December 1913 is addressed to "Mrs. Annie Fry," and asks, with evident sadness, why her mother doesn't write. A 1923 newspaper item records her visiting Anna Maud in Creede. Her 1932 death certificate gives her name as Mrs. Anna E. Fry. The final chapter, as related by Anna Maud's granddaughter, Anna Maud "Polly" Davis, is the most affecting part of Annie's story. After decades of separation, Anna Maud prepared a cabin for her mother at the family ranch, and the family looked forward to a long-delayed reunion. Annie was reportedly afraid to come, saying she would die there; the family reassured her, and she came. Within days of her arrival, Anna Maud found her mother dead in her bed — a detail the 1932 death certificate confirms independently, recording the cause of death as a probable cerebral hemorrhage and noting she was "found dead in bed." Mother and daughter were reunited only to be parted again almost immediately after. **A note on what's not yet here:** this page deliberately holds back the detailed circumstances of the 1899 divorce — including allegations made by both parties, John's subsequent remarriage, and the death of Annie's son David Henry in the months that followed — pending a dedicated research session to review the full case file and contemporary newspaper coverage with the care those documents deserve.

Open Research Questions

  2. Who were Annie's parents? The France vs. Ohio birthplace discrepancy for her father remains the highest-priority unresolved conflict.
  3. What were the actual circumstances of Annie's divorce from John Farney Woodruff? This is under active research and will substantially expand this page.
  4. What became of David Henry Woodruff? Born 13 June 1882 per the family Bible and named as a minor child in John and Annie's divorce pleadings (September 1899), David Henry is entirely absent from the family Deaths register and was unknown to the family until uncovered by this research. The Victor Record (22 Sept 1900) reports a Henry Woodruff, described as a prospector living in a cabin six miles west of Victor, removed to St. Nicholas Hospital with a severe attack of typhoid fever — consistent with a boy who was a minor in his parents' custody dispute a year earlier now living independently at 17 or 18, as was common for young men on the mining frontier. A Colorado Springs Gazette item, 'To Investigate a Death' (8 Dec 1900), reports the death — at 'the Sisters' hospital,' almost certainly the same Catholic-run St. Nicholas Hospital — of a 17-year-old 'Henry Woodruff' whose parents lived at Divide, Colorado, following a relapse of the same illness; an autopsy was ordered after the attending physician stated the fever itself was not the cause of death. The Gazette's stated age (17) is a year younger than David Henry's documented birth date would make him at this date — ordinary period reporting imprecision, or a sign this is a different Henry Woodruff entirely. Working Hypothesis, not yet confirmed by name. Notably, Divide Cemetery is confirmed as an established Woodruff family burial ground — it holds William Wilson Woodruff (his body returned from Wyoming specifically for burial there), John's fourth wife Ida B. Williams (Emmons), and a headstone marking an intended, ultimately unused, burial plot for John himself beside Ida. David Henry does not appear among Divide Cemetery's Woodruff burials, which sharpens rather than resolves the mystery: he may not have been buried there at all, may have been buried without a marker and never recorded on Find a Grave, or the 1900 Henry Woodruff of Victor/Divide may not be him after all.
  5. Was there a legal marriage to Henry Fry, or did Annie adopt the name and the identity of his widow without one? This question is connected to disputed claims made during the Woodruff divorce proceedings and is under active research.
  6. Who was the 'infirm uncle' Annie reportedly married before John Farney Woodruff? No record, name, or date has been located; this comes from family account only.
  7. Where did Annie live, and with whom, in the more than three decades between her 1899 divorce and her return to family in 1932? Trinidad and Walsenburg are documented; the full picture is not.
  8. Who was 'Mary Fry Phelps'? Lee Roy's 1953 death certificate gives his mother's maiden name as 'Mary Fry Phelps,' Missouri — matching neither 'Annie E. Chaney' (her name throughout her marriage to John) nor any other documented identity, though it notably echoes the 'Fry' surname she is independently documented using from about 1910 onward. Possible explanations include: 'Fry' was a name she carried from before her marriage to John, not merely one she adopted afterward; 'Phelps' represents a distinct, still-earlier identity; or the informant — quite possibly hospital staff working from Lee Roy's own WWI service record rather than a family member's memory — introduced an error decades removed from any firsthand knowledge. Unresolved.
  9. Florence Woodruff's 1954 divorce from Sherry O. Curtis states their date of separation as about one year before filing — but the couple's documented 1920 Colorado marriage to Edwin L. Bennett implies they had, in practice, been apart for roughly 34 years by then. The stated separation date appears to be a legal formality rather than a factual account, likely intended to regularize the earlier (unlawful) 1920 Bennett marriage without a public accounting of the intervening decades.
  10. No divorce decree has been located for Edwin L. Bennett's first marriage, to Lena Garrison (10 Jan 1916, Creede, Colorado). Ted's own sworn 1954 marriage application states he was divorced in Colorado in 1920, but no independent decree has yet been found to confirm it.
